Biography
Aaliyah Haughton was born on Jan.16,1979 in Brooklyn, New York. Aaliyah was born to be a star. Things really get started when she was just five and her family moved to Detroit. This is where her career started. Much of the credit for aaliyahs success should go to her mother who realized the potentials of her daughter at a very early age. Her mother signed her pre-schooler up for vocal training and an endless string of performance auditions. Once she got admitted in school Aaliyah was a name in the list whenever there were plays in the school. At the age of nine she appeared for television’s Star Search. here she sang My Funny Valentine as an homage to her mom.. Two years later she was singing with Gladys Knight onstage in Las Vegas.
In addition to her talent Aaliyah also recieved the support of her relative to reach the apex of the Hollywood music industry. Her uncle Barry Hankerson was the CEO of the artist management company Blackground Enterprises. In 1992, she met with R&B artist R. Kelly, who quickly took Aaliyah under his wing as they started working on various songs and recording projects. Aaliyah's debut album was launched in June of 1994. Titled Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, it topped the charts with the single "Back and Forth," as well as with the remake of the Isley Brothers' hit "At Your Best (You Are In Love)," which reached the Top 5.
She was definitely gaining recognition in the music industry but together she was wanting to pursue her studies in Performing Arts, while majoring in Dance. Her time was devoted to performing as she made collaborative projects with Junior M.A.F.I.A., Kriss Kross, and she appeared on the Notorious B.I.G.'s video for "One More Chance." She also recorded the sultry "Are You Ready?" for the Sunset Park soundtrack.
Now Aaliyah was prepared to record for her second album. In 1996, aaliyah carved out a niche for herself in the Hollywood with the release of her single "If Your Girl Only Knew." The album was certified double platinum after only ten months on the market, putting Aaliyah among the superstars of the music industry. She was soon featured in Elle, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan, and turned her talent towards Hollywood when she recorded singles for the soundtracks of Dr. Dolittle and Anastasia, with the song "Journey to the Past." She performed the latter at the Academy Awards, making her one of the youngest ever performers of an Oscar nominated song.
Then came the big-screen acting debut. Aaliyah was cast in the “Juliette” role (“Trish” for this movie) in the kung-fu action romance Romeo Must Die (2000). She was also (of course) hired for the soundtrack and the MTV Award-winning soundtrack video. Next in line which gave more success to this already popular singer was "Try Again,". this brought her 2 Grammy nominations and the 2000 MTV awards for Best Female Video and Video From a Film.
However luck was on the negative side for aaliyah Haughton. She was unfortunately killed in a plane crash that took the lives of eight others on Saturday, August 25th, 2001, on the way to Miami from the Bahamas.
